Designing an interventional training program for infection prevention and control among medical undergraduates

Abstract

Introduction: Infection prevention and control (IPC) practices are the cornerstone for control of Healthcare Associated Infections (HAIs) which are a significant global burden. There exists a gap in the knowledge, attitude and practice (KAP) among healthcare providers of various categories as well as intra-category knowledge-practice gaps.

Methods: A desk review was conducted with the aim of designing an interventional training program for the medical undergraduates in our tertiary teaching institution. Various databases were searched and relevant articles were shortlisted. Information related to IPC practices applicable to work ethic of doctors was extracted and compiled. 

Results: The studies varied with respect to the study population, mode of intervention, time of assessment
post-intervention and research methods used. Studies among medical students were few. Consistent knowledge practice gaps of 20-40% and improvement with interactive methods was seen. Most studies (65%) assessed knowledge change post-intervention at 1 month, change in attitude is demonstrable post 3 months. Use of qualitative research methods was low in studies among Indian medical undergraduates. A mixed method interventional KAP study among medical undergraduates with educational interventions was designed as a mixed-method research which included Focus Group Discussions. The KAP questionnaire was validated and tested for internal consistency (Crohnbach alpha for knowledge 0.8, attitude 0.8 and practice 0.7).

Conclusion: The structured training program will be based on insights from the study which will also guide appropriate suggestions for concerned administrative authorities.
